Meeting of ASEAN–India Working Group on Agriculture & Forestry in Indonesia

Mittal, ADG(EQR), ICARThe 2nd Meeting of the ASEAN-India Working Group on Agriculture & Forestry was held on 6-8 March, 2012 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia.  The meeting was inaugurated by H.E. Governor of South Sumatra and participated by the delegates from the Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and India.  Mr. Hari Priyono, Secretary General, Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia in his capacity as the SOM-AMAF Chairman and Dr. R. K. Mittal, ADG(EQR), ICAR co-chaired the meeting. 

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mittal informed that the significant progress has been made in the activities which were identified in the last Working Group Meeting at New Delhi for implementation during 2011-12.  Already, the first Meeting of Agriculture Ministers of ASEAN States and India has held at Jakarta, Indonesia on October 08, 2011 which endorsed the Terms of Reference for the Working Group and Medium Term Plan of Action for 2011-15.  Three training programmes proposed by India for scientists of ASEAN Member States have been approved and will be conducted during April-May, 2012 in India. 

Mr. Alex Noerdin, Governor of South Sumatra in his inaugural address, highlighted the policy of Govt. of Indonesia to accelerate the pace of economic development to achieve the vision of Indonesia Independent, Forward, Equitable and Prosperous in 2025.   He also presented the overview of economic development of South Sumatra.

During the meeting, it was agreed to hold a Conference of Heads of Educational and Research Institutions in India, Workshop on climate change adaptation and mitigation in agriculture, 2nd ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture & Forestry and an ASEAN-India Agri-Expo during the current year in India.  The ASEAN-India Newsletter on Agriculture and Forestry will be published bi-annually and the exchange visits of farmers between ASEAN and India will be organized.  Sixteen other training proposals submitted by Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia were also briefly discussed and the mechanism for submission of project proposals was firmed up.  It was also agreed that the next meeting of the Working Group will be held in India tentatively in the first quarter of 2013.

Dr. Madan Mohan, ADG (Marine Fisheries), ICAR; Dr. T.S. Rathore, Director, Arid Forestry Research Institute, Jodhpur and Mr. Nikhilesh Giri, First Secretary, Indian Embassy in Jakarta participated in discussions as Member of Indian delegation.
