'The off-site impact of pesticides should not be compared on the consumption basis. It can be seen in comparison to different geographical conditions of each region. Pesticides can give different results in different climatic conditions’, said Dr. C.D. Mayee, Chairman, Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board. Dr. Mayee was inaugurating a workshop on ‘Minimizing Off-site Impacts of Pesticides: A Risk Based Approach’, jointly organized by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry(SETAC)-Asia Pacific, TERI and The Society of Pesticide Science, IARI, New Delhi at India Habitat Center, New Delhi.
‘The concept of IPM is based on Ecology and Economics in which pesticides is an important component. This approach can give long term results’, he added.
He emphasized on more awareness for judicious use of pesticides among farmers at grass root level. This awareness may be concentrated on the basic questions-How to use pesticides? When and how many pesticides must be used for maximum results? he said.
