The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin conducted a three-day Skill Development Programme for the youth in the Kadamakkudy Panchayat with aim to help them become small-scale entrepreneurs in cage fish farming.
The Korampadam Service Co-operative Bank, Kothad and the ICAR-CMFRI jointly provided the youth with the training in the various stages of cage fish farming, such as, cage fabrication, site identification, species selection, feed management, harvest and marketing, etc.
In furthering the step for promoting the cage farming enterprises in the backwaters of the Panchayat, the ICAR-CMFRI will provide the villagers with the technical guidance, while the Bank will be offering loan facility in the form of initial capital to the villagers starting the cage fish farming.
The CMFRI will further extend the technical support to the farmers on each phases of the cage farming to empower them in becoming entrepreneurs in the field. The various species, such as, cobia, sea bass, snappers, mullet and pearl spot will be used for the cage farming.
So far, around 2,500 fishermen all over the country have been trained by the ICAR-CMFRI. Along with this, around 2,500 cage fish farming units are currently operational across the coastal states under the CMFRI’s technical guidance.
The collaborative programme has been linked with ICAR-CMFRI’s ongoing project launched last year that aims to 5,000 fishermen across the country in practicing the cage fish farming with the financial assistance of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).
The programme registered a total footfall by 114 villagers.
