Under the efforts for expanding sunflower crop in NEH states, ICAR- Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR), Hyderabad organized a Field Day on Sunflower in collaboration with College of Agriculture Tripura, Lembucherra, in Tripura on April 09, 2018.
Dr S.P. Sarkar, Director Agriculture, Govt. of Tripura, Chairman of the meeting, said about 1 lakh hectares of land is available as rice fallow which could be used for growing sunflower and sesame.
Dr. IYLN Murthy, Director/ In-charge, ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad, Guest of Honour, stated the importance of production of oil seeds especially North Eastern Region and West Bengal areas of India. He urged the farmers to become self-reliant in producing sunflower and sesame oil for local consumption.
Dr. M. Dutta, Principal, CAT highlighted the objectives of programme.
Seven member team of different subject matter specialists interacted with the 100 progressive farmers for production and possibility of expansion of area under sunflower and sesame. Early maturing (85-90 days) sunflower varieties/hybrids were found to be suitable to the area.
Another field day on Niger and sesame was organized on April 12, 2018 at ICAR-NEH complex Basar Centre at Arunachal Pradesh..
The programme was chaired by chief guest Mr. H. Dhiyum, Assistant District Collector, Basar Circle.
During the inaugural session farmers were exposed to the knowledge about the edible oil scenario of our country and the scope of area expansion in NEH regions. A fruitful interaction with farmers took place in the field and discussed various aspects of Niger and sesame cultivation.
80 farmers attended the field day along with line department officers, scientists from host Institute and subject matter specialists from ICAR-KVK-Basar
