Huge quantum of agricultural data in the form of soil health records, geospatial maps, weather information, production and yield records, market data, experimental data, survey data, etc. are being generated continuously. The data thus generated are gradually increasing to unmanageable proportion challenging the capacity and computing abilities of the present system. Big data framework can be effectively utilized to capture, store, process and analyze huge voluminous and streaming data. In big data analytics, the data are processed in cluster mode and advanced big data computing techniques can be employed for providing customized services to different stakeholders in agriculture. Case discussions, lectures and demonstrations of portals in various domains were organized during the 2 days programme. A panel discussion on various applications of big data in agriculture was also organized as part of the programme. Experts in the field of agriculture, veterinary, fisheries, social scientists, statisticians and computer science have participated in the panel discussion. Panelists of the view that though there is plenty of data generated, there is hardly any big data platform developed in agriculture. Developing such a platform would enable the policy makers making better decision-making which will benefit the farming community. Further, there is a greater need for capacity development programme to implement big data analytics.
