National Symposium on “Livestock Biodiversity Conservation & Utilization: Lessons from past and future perspectives”

The National Symposium was jointly organized by Society for the Conservation of Domestic Animal Biodiversity (SOCDAB) and National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal in commemoration of Silver jubilee year of the Bureau on 12-13 February, 2009. The Symposium was inaugurated by Dr. P L Gautam , the Noted Plant Geneticist and Chairman, National Biodiversity Authority, Government of India. The Inaugural Function was presided over by Dr. K M Bujarbaruah, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR.  Dr. S.P.S. Ahlawat, Vice-Chancellor and Director, IVRI, Izatnagar and Dr A.K. Srivastava, Vice Chancellor and Director, NDRI, Karnal graced the occasion as Guests of Honour. More than 175 delegates from India, USA and Germany participated in the function. A Silver Jubilee Lecture on AnGR of India was delivered by Dr. S.P.S. Ahlawat, Vice Chancellor. The Symposium was conducted in five Technical sessions covering different aspects of AnGR Characterization and Conservation, including a new Session on Young Scientist Award . The society started a journal “ The Journal of Livestock Biodiversity” of which the first issue was inaugurated during the Symposium.

One day Sensitization Workshop was organized by NBAGR for field level functionaries of State Animal Husbandry Departments on 17th March, 2009 under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on ‘Conservation of Threatened Breeds of Livestock' wherein various programs on livestock characterization, conservation and evaluation were discussed. Fifteen field level functionaries belonging to States of  Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh attended the Workshop. Dr. B.R.Acharyya, Assistant Commissioner(AH) also attended the programme as a representative of the sponsoring agency i.e. Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries, Government of India, New Delhi.
