ICAR-NBFGR Ranches Newly Described Fish Species in Chalakudy River, Kerala

As part of its conservation efforts, the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow successfully carried out the ranching of captive propagated advanced fingerlings of Horabagrus obscurus, a newly described freshwater fish species, in the Chalakudy River, Kerala. 

The initiative aims to conserve the species while supporting the fragile aquatic ecosystems of the Western Ghats region.

The Dr. Grinson George, Director, ICAR-CMFRI, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and emphasized the sustainable utilization of valuable fish species through such initiatives.

Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, highlighted the importance of ranching programmes in species conservation and habitat protection for future generations. 

A total of 2000 advanced fingerlings were released into their natural habitat at Vettilapara. This species, with significant conservation value and aquaculture potential, was recently described by ICAR-NBFGR, which has also developed its captive propagation technology.

Following the ranching programme, an input distribution event was organized under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) of the institute. Essential livelihood inputs such as fishing nets, head torches, and fish carrier bags were distributed to 20 tribal fishers from the region, supporting their livelihood enhancement.

The event witnessed participation from 50 local stakeholders, including officials from the forest department, local panchayats, fishers, and fish farmers.
