ICAR-Central Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Kochi, celebrated World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2023 with the theme “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together” today.
Dr. M. P. Remesan, Director (i/c) accentuated the importance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the fisheries sector.
Dr. T. Raja Swaminathan, Head, Microbiology Fermentation and Biotechnology (MFB) Division emphasised the use of antibiotics against infectious and emerging fish pathogens and the spread of AMR due to misuse of these antibiotics in fish farming. He also emphasised the programme educated One Health stakeholders on AMR and promoted best practices to prevent drug-resistant infections.
Dr. Anil Kumar, Head, Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapetham, Kochi, emphasised the importance of AMR for the public health and animals under the One Health concept.
Dr. Geethalakshmi, Head (i/c), EIS, Division coordinated the program.
To sensitize the school students about the impact of AMR, MFB Division Scientists, and Technical staff conducted special awareness campaigns for the school students of Kendriya Vidhyala-1, Naval Base, Cochin and Seventh Day Adventist School, Kaloor, Ernakulam today.
Scientists and technical staff including Smt enacted a “Nukkad Natak” in the Hindi language. Muthulakshmi, Smt. Vinitha Das, Smt. Prineetha and Smt. Reshmi for spreading awareness about the aftermath effects of over and underusing antibiotics. Overall 150 students benefitted from the program. The entire program was conducted under the guidance of Dr. George Ninan, Director, ICAR-CIFT, Cochin.
More than 100 stakeholders participated in the program.
