Establishing Conservation Unit of threatened Teressa Goat and Interface Meet on documenting AnGR of A & N Islands

The 15th Interface Meet on Characterization & Documentation of AnGR of A & N (UT) under the mission towards zero non-descript was organized jointly, by ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, and ICAR - Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair at ICAR-CIARI today.

Teressa goat is one of the threatened indigenous breed as per Breed Watchlist 2022 released by ICAR- NBAGR.

On the occasion, Dr. Bhupendra Nath Tripathi, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) inaugurated the first conservation unit of the Indian goat breed i.e. Teressa goat at ICAR-CIARI. The modern, eco-friendly, less labor-intensive, and a state of art goat shed is useful for raising goats under impending climate change scenarios with minimum medication.

Dr. Tripathi made a clarion call to transform A&N Islands into a disease-free island for the production of export quality animals and further characterization of animals with the aid of contemporary omics tools.

Dr. P.K. Rout, Assistant Director General (AP&B briefed the need for the identification of genetic disorder traits, the selection of other productive and reproductive tools (known as economic traits) through the use of modern technologies.

Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI briefed about the mission, vision, and mandate of the Institute and its uniqueness amidst diversity.

Dr. B.P. Mishra, Director, ICAR-NBAGR emphasized indigenous animal genetic resources which is a hidden treasure of India that is used by resource-poor farmers for energy budgeting, and production and can thrive under impending climate change scenarios.

Dr. K.A. Naveen, Director, DAHVS, A&N Islands highlighted the endemic animals which demand attention for characterization and conservation as well.

Team of ICAR-NBAGR also visited other livestock and poultry sheds as the altar for the maintenance of endemic breeds of the A&N archipelago which are reared in the villages by the settlers and indigenes of the Islands.

Earlier, Dr. Jai Sunder, HOD, the Animal Science Division of ICAR-CIARI delivered a welcome address.

A total of 30 delegates from ICAR, KVK, and Line departments attended the Meet.
