ICAR–Mahatma Gandhi Integrated Farming Research Institute, Motihari, Bihar, organised an Animal Health Camp-cum-Awareness Programme under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) at Kothia Hariram Panchayat (Kankatti Bazar), Mehsi Block, East Champaran, Bihar, to improve livestock health and promote scientific animal husbandry practices.
Organised under the guidance of Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Director, ICAR–MGIFRI, the camp focused on preventive animal healthcare, early disease identification, timely treatment and improved livestock management to strengthen rural livelihoods and nutritional security.
Farmers received technical guidance on recognising signs of illness, preventing common diseases and adopting scientific feeding and nutritional management practices. The discussions covered balanced ration formulation, mineral supplementation and the use of locally available feed resources to reduce feeding costs, improve milk production and enhance reproductive performance.

During the camp, 340 animals were examined and treated, including 78 cattle, 62 buffaloes, 197 goats, two dogs and one horse. The major health concerns identified included loss of appetite (anorexia), low milk production, internal and external parasitic infestations, anestrus, repeat breeding and respiratory disorders. Veterinary medicines and feed supplements were distributed according to the animals’ clinical conditions and nutritional requirements.
Interactive sessions also addressed deworming, parasite control, reproductive health, disease prevention and improved animal husbandry practices. Livestock owners shared their experiences and received practical advice on managing common animal health problems, with particular attention to the challenges of rural and waterlogged ecosystems.
Participants appreciated the veterinary services and scientific guidance provided by the institute. The initiative reaffirmed ICAR–MGIFRI’s commitment to improving livestock health, strengthening livelihood security and promoting sustainable livestock-based farming systems through targeted outreach and capacity-building programmes under SCSP in eastern Bihar.
The programme benefited 102 livestock owners, including 78 men and 24 women.
