ICAR Manipur Centre Releases India’s First High-Yielding Semi-Dwarf Black Rice Variety ‘RC Manichakhao-1’

RC Manichakhao 1 is a semi-dwarf high yielding variety, with improved cooking quality, high anthocyanin content and a yield potential of 4.5 to 5.0 tonnes per hectare which is double the yield of traditional black rice locally called Chakhao landraces.

The variety was developed by Dr Konsam Sarika, Scientist, Genetics and Plant Breeding and her team. This development will not only address yield limitations of existing varieties but also aligns with the increasing market demand for black rice, potentially enhancing the livelihoods of local farmers and capitalizing the benefits of its Geographical Indication (GI) tag through export in national and global markets.
