13-15 October 2026, Phek, Nagaland
With the objective of strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting sustainable poultry-based income generation, a three-day capacity-building programme titled “Empowering Rural Livelihood through Scientific Backyard Poultry Management under NEH Programme” was conducted from 13 to 15 October 2026 at KVK Phek.
The initiative was organised by ICAR–Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, in collaboration with ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek, under ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, functioning under ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone VII, Umiam.
The programme was conducted under the leadership of ICAR–KVK Phek. It aimed to enhance farmers’ technical knowledge and practical skills in scientific backyard poultry management, with a focus on improving household income, strengthening nutritional security and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural communities.
Over the three-day programme, a series of expert lectures, technical sessions and hands-on training activities were conducted by subject-matter experts to provide participants with practical knowledge and skills in scientific poultry rearing and health management.

During the programme, the Principal Investigator of the project highlighted the potential of backyard poultry as a viable livelihood option for rural households. The session emphasized the importance of adopting improved poultry-rearing practices, including appropriate housing, balanced feeding, routine health care, disease prevention, hygienic management, product value addition and effective marketing strategies. Participants were also encouraged to apply the technical knowledge gained during the training to improve productivity and ensure long-term sustainability.
A technical session on vaccination protocols and preventive health care in poultry was also conducted. The session covered different types of vaccines, their application methods and essential biosafety precautions to reduce disease risks and maintain the health of backyard poultry flocks.
Farmer–scientist interactions formed an important component of the programme, enabling participants to exchange experiences, discuss field-level problems and obtain expert advice on the scientific management of poultry birds.

To facilitate the adoption of the technologies demonstrated during the training, participants received poultry chicks along with starter feed, feeders, drinkers, multivitamin supplements and multimineral supplements. The distribution was intended to help farmers initiate or strengthen their backyard poultry units and apply the recommended management practices.
The programme represents a collaborative effort towards improving farmers’ technical competency and promoting small-scale poultry enterprises as a means of enhancing nutritional well-being, generating supplementary earnings and supporting livelihood security among rural communities in Phek district, Nagaland.
