On the occasion of World Food Day, ICAR–Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, Barrackpore organised a special lecture today, to create awareness about the role of science and innovation in building nutrition-secure, and climate-resilient food systems. The programme was organized in consonance with this year’s World Food Day theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow”.
Dr Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR–CRIJAF, emphasized the need for scientific innovation, collective responsibility and sustainable agricultural practices in ensuring food and nutritional security for a growing population. He also highlighted the importance of natural fibres in sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.

The distinguished guest and speaker, Prof. (Dr) Kailash C. Bansal, Former Director, ICAR–National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi, and Fellow National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, delivered an insightful lecture on “Genome Editing for Food, Nutrition, and Climate Resilience.” He elaborated on how genome editing can contribute to higher productivity, improved nutrition and stress resilience in crops, while conserving natural resources and reducing dependence on chemical inputs.

Prof. Bansal also reviewed the ongoing genome editing project and offered valuable suggestions for improving the on-going research on functional genomics and genome editing work in jute and allied fibre crops.
All the participants, including scientists, technical personnel, research scholars, students and other staff members of the Institute, actively participated in the programme, making it an informative and enriching observance of World Food Day.
