ICAR-CIFE Celebrates 65 Glorious Years of Excellence in Fisheries Education

ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, celebrated its 65th Foundation Day with great enthusiasm and pride today. The occasion marked more than six decades of the institute’s remarkable contributions to fisheries education, research, and development in India.

The Chief Guest, Shri Ramaswamy N., IAS, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra, acknowledged the institute's pivotal role in fisheries education and emphasized its commitment to nurturing high-quality human resources in the sector.

Highlighting the importance of fisheries and aquaculture, he said, “These sectors are not only vital to India’s economic progress but also play a crucial role in ensuring nutritional security for our people.” He commended ICAR-CIFE for its outstanding work in uplifting the socio-economic status of the fish farming community and encouraged continued efforts in this direction.

Shri Haroon Khan, Member of Legislative Assembly, Versova Assembly Constituency, and Dr. Dilip Kumar, former Director, ICAR-CIFE, were the Guests of Honour.

Shri Khan lauded the institute's invaluable role in the advancement of fisheries across the country. “Over the past 65 years, ICAR-CIFE has made transformative contributions that have significantly enhanced the livelihoods of fishers across India. The sector is rapidly progressing, and this growth is integral to the nation’s overall development,” he said. He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the future growth of the institute.

Dr. N.P. Sahu, Acting Director and Vice-Chancellor, ICAR-CIFE, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the former and current faculty, staff, and students for their dedicated contributions to the institute’s journey.

“ICAR-CIFE stands as a beacon of excellence in fisheries and aquaculture education. Over the years, we have nurtured eminent scientists, visionary leaders, and dedicated professionals,” he said. Dr. Sahu also highlighted the institute's pivotal role in Maharashtra’s fisheries development and shared future plans to strengthen its outreach and impact.

As part of the celebrations, awards were conferred upon staff and students in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and contributions to institutional development. Winners of various sports competitions were also felicitated.
