Jute based products are gaining importance as the best alternative to plastics. The relevance of such eco-friendly goods made from jute fibre has increased after ban of plastic products in phased manner. ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibers, Barrackpore I working on the technological and economic empowerment of SHGs and FPOs to strengthen the activities of FPOs by capacity building of farmers and farm women on jute production and value addition.


The institute organised a Farmer- Scientist Interaction Meeting under Scheduled Caste Sub-plan (SCSP) to empower Farmer’s Producers Organizations (FPOs) at SEVA Farmers’ Samiti in Gobardanga, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal today.
Dr. Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF urged the farmers to adopt technologies to enhance yield and quality of the produce as well as increase their farm income. He briefed about the benefits of the technologies like improved variety, jute seeder for line sowing, nail weeder and jute weeder for mechanical weeding, CRIJAF SONA microbial formulation for improved retting of jute and in-situ retting pond-based integrated farming system for year-round all-weather income and nutritional security of the farmers. He exhort the farmers to utilize their un / underutilized family workforce (female and youth members) in making jute-based diversified products for off-farm income generation. Dr. Kar said that the scientists and farmers should work in tandem to develop the FPO as a model that can showcase the strength of the technology of ICAR-CRIJAF.
A farmer-scientist interaction session was arranged where the queries raised by the farmers about different problems related to the crops were answered by the Scientists.
Around 170 SC farmers of adjacent villages of Gobardanga area and 10 scientists of ICAR-CRIJAF participated in this programme.
