ICAR-National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology, Kolkata organized National Handloom Day to celebrate pride of India's traditional textiles, craftsmanship, diversified product manufacturer and promoting handloom products today.
Dr. D. B. Shakyawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET, highlighting importance of National Handloom Day. It is not just a recognition of handloom fabric, it actually recognizes the craftsman, their skill, innovation, and novelty in weaving of various national heritage fibres. All over the country, it is celebrated to support the artisan, uphold the tradition, showcase Indian heritage in the global platform, and urge the citizen to use handloom products.

The Chief Guest, Shri Moloy Chandan Chakrabortty, Jute Commissioner, Ministry of Textile, lauded the Institute’s contribution in the area of making handloom products from different natural fibres viz., jute, ramie, flax, hemp, nettle, banana and cotton along with design intervention. He applauded several lakh people are engage in this sector, and there a promising domestic and international market for handloom products, like sari, mat & matting, rugs, cushion cover, home furnishing.
Dr. Mahadeb Datta, Deputy Director, NJB mentioned the cultural significance, economic impact, and role of women's empowerment in handloom sector. More concerted multiorganizational effort is needed among the R&D institute, fashion & design institute, and policy maker & implementing institute for upliftment of weaver and artisan. Mr. Anup Pandey, Vice President, Birla Corporation Limited pointed out rich culture and heritage of handloom products in West Bengal, considering cotton and jute products portfolio.

On this occasion the several handloom weavers were facilitated, who are way forwarding institute technologies for handloom products. Products manufacturer from Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Murshidabad; Nadia Organic Farmer producer Ltd., and Fulia Women & Youths Welfare Society, Nadia exhibited their handloom products for sales-cum-exhibition.
