A 5-day training programme on ‘Seed production and hatchery management of golden mahseer’ was organised at ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research from 10th – 14th June 2024. The Institute is advancing captive breeding, seed production, and hatchery management for the endangered golden mahseer, a species that requires rehabilitation and conservation through ranching in its natural habitats, a significant contribution to its conservation efforts.

The training focused on understanding the golden mahseer, its resources, environmental impact, bio-filter system for captive maturation and spawning, health management, angling, ecotourism prospects, conservation, ranching, and model guidelines. The trainees also learned DPR preparation for establishing a mahseer hatchery.

Theoretical sessions and practical demonstrations were conducted on various aspects of golden mahseer seed production, including captive maturation, breeding, hatchery management, water quality analysis, bio-filter fabrication, broodstock nutrition, larval nutrition, live feed culture, and nursery rearing.

The training provided trainees with the necessary knowledge, skills, and best practices for successful seed production, promoting the growth and sustainability of golden mahseer populations.

A total of 12 participants attended the training programme.
