“Statistics plays an important role in every area of research and planning. Agricultural statistics together with judicious use of informatics provides the foundation for sound agricultural research and planning”, said Prof. Abhijit Sen, Member, Planning Commission while delivering the inaugural address and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Memorial Lecture as Chief Guest in the 66th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics at NASC complex, New Delhi here today. He said that significant and original contributions have been made by Indian Statisticians in areas of design of experiments, sampling technique, statistical genetics, modeling and forecasting techniques etc. Prof. Sen hoped that the deliberation in this conference would lead to recommendations that help in the promotion of research in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and President, Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics expressed his satisfaction on efforts made by statisticians in NARS in developing design resource server, capacity building in statistical computing, service oriented computing modules, as also the initiatives taken for creating a high powered computing infrastructure for research in bioinformatics. He hoped that a meaningful academic discussion during the conference would enable to draw the future agenda of research.
Dr. V.K. Bhatia, Secretary, Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics and Director, Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute presented the Secretary Report.
Earlier, Prof. V.K. Gupta, ICAR National Professor and Organizing Chair welcomed the dignitaries. Dr. M.M. Pandey, DDG (Engineering), ICAR, Dr. Prem Narain, Executive President, Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics and Dr. Rajender Prasad, Organizing Secretary were also present on the occasion.
The 3-day (18-20 December, 2012) International Conference is being organized by Indian Society of Agricultural Statistics. Senior scientists, statisticians and students from different ICAR institutes and foreign delegates are also participating in the Conference.
