Kalaburagi Tur Dal, a traditional and important agricultural product of the Kalaburagi region received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, providing a distinct identity and market opportunity for the region’s pigeonpea growers and value-chain stakeholders. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kalaburagi and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur played a key role in facilitating the GI registration process of Kalaburagi Tur.

The KVK’s extensive farmer network and regular training programmes provided an effective platform for creating awareness about GI protection and its potential benefits to farmers. After GI recognition, KVK continued its efforts towards maintaining quality, enhancing production and promoting value addition in pigeonpea with improved varieties, moisture-conservation, integrated pest, disease and nutrient management through large scale demonstration of location-specific production technologies.

The GI recognition has strengthened the identity and market potential of Kalaburagi Tur Dal. The recent export of GI-tagged Kalaburagi Tur Dal to the Maldives marks an important milestone, demonstrating the emerging international market potential of the region’s iconic pigeonpea product. The journey of Kalaburagi Tur from a traditional farmer product to a GI-recognised product and subsequently to an international market reflects the collaborative efforts of UAS Raichur, KVK Kalaburagi and the farmers.
