ICAR–Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad, organised a Kisan Mela at Kusarampalli village in Chincholi Taluk of Kalaburagi district, Karnataka, under its Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) programme today. The programme aimed to promote climate-resilient agricultural practices and enhance farmers' preparedness for anticipated El Niño conditions.
During the programme, scientists sensitized farmers to the likely impact of El Niño on agriculture and advised them on appropriate crop management strategies to minimise climate-related risks. They emphasized the adoption of climate-resilient farming practices and suitable adaptation measures to sustain agricultural productivity under changing weather conditions.
As part of the SC Sub Plan initiative, eligible beneficiary farmers were provided with bullock-drawn planters, hand weeders, bio-fertilizers, and seedlings of mango, lemon, guava and pomegranate to strengthen farm mechanization, promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance farm productivity.
Scientists also distributed soil health awareness folders to encourage soil testing and promote balanced fertilizer use for improving soil fertility. They highlighted the importance of cultivating millets and establishing backyard nutri-gardens to strengthen household nutritional security. Farmers were further sensitized on the benefits of rainwater harvesting, agroforestry and the use of bio-fertilizers for enhancing crop productivity and building climate resilience.
A large number of farmers from Kusarampalli, Shivreddypalli, Chindanoor and neighbouring villages actively participated in the programme.
