ICAR-CPRI Shimla Celebrates its 77th Foundation Day

ICAR–Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla celebrated its 77th Foundation Day on 27th August 2025. The event was graced by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi, as the Chief Guest, along with Mr. Surendra Chauhan, Mayor of MC Shimla, and Dr. V.P. Sharma, Director, Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan, as special guests.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. Brajesh Singh, Director, ICAR-CPRI, highlighted the Institute’s significant achievements. He informed that the institute has so far developed 76 potato varieties adaptable to different regions and climates of India, with four new varieties awaiting notification.  

In his address, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR emphasized how ICAR-CPRI’s pioneering research enabled potato cultivation to spread from high-altitude areas to the plains, making India the second-largest potato producer globally after China.

Mayor Surinder Chauhan praised ICAR-CPRI as not only the pride of Shimla but also among the leading ICAR institutes worldwide.

On this occasion, Best Worker Awards were presented to Dr. Tanuja Bakseth, Mrs. Kusum Singh, Mr. Gurujit Singh, and Mr. Ranveer Singh for their exemplary contributions.

The Institute also honored 27 progressive farmers of Himachal Pradesh and recognized scientists for achievements in PCN quarantine-free seed production.
