10 June 2026, Goa

ICAR–Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa, today, conducted an awareness-cum-field visit under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at the farm of Mr. Datta Shambhu Naik in Gaothan, Priol. Mr. Naik, a highly acclaimed progressive farmer and recipient of the Government of Goa’s Biodiversity Award, is widely recognized for his dedication to preserving rare fruits and vegetables used in Matoli—the traditional natural decoration for the Ganesh festival. His diversified farm includes areca nut, cashew, paddy, and jackfruit.

During the visit, the senior officials demonstrated the critical importance of soil health management, balanced fertilizer application, and the integration of organic manures. The session included practical, hands-on demonstrations of natural farming formulations.

A standout feature of Mr. Naik’s farm is his commitment to sustainable land utilization; he actively encourages fellow farmers to cultivate fallow lands, demonstrating how scientific approaches can drive significant gains in agricultural profitability.

Furthermore, Mr. Naik’s farm serves as a living classroom, where he trains school-aged children in the complete cycle of paddy cultivation—from nursery preparation to transplantation and post-harvest care—ensuring the next generation remains connected to the land.
