The ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in collaboration with the MTTC & VTC, College of Fisheries, Lembucherra, Tripura organized a Planning Workshop on “Scaling-up of Nutrition-Sensitive Horticultural Interventions to combat Hidden Hunger” today.

The Workshop was organized under the ICAR-CTCRI’s North-Eastern Hills Region Programme.

Inaugurating the Workshop, Dr. Sidharth Shiv Jaiswal, I.A.S., Mission Director, National Health Mission, Tripura his concerns over the increasing cases of Chronic Malnutrition or Stunting among the children below 5 Years of age in Tripura despite the large scale implementation of the Government Programmes to combat it. He stressed on the multi-stakeholder approach for the implementation of the nutrition-sensitive agricultural interventions to combat the micronutrient deficiencies.

Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha, Dean, College of Fisheries, Central Agricultural University (I), Tripura emphasized on the need for developing a sound approach to customize the nutrition-sensitive agricultural innovations for addressing the household level nutritional needs.

Dr. Mahesh B. Tengli, Assistant Professor and Co-Principal Investigator, Rainbow Diet Campaign Project at Tripura underlined the multi-stakeholder-oriented projects implemented by the MTTC & VTC, College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Tripura.

Dr.  T.K. Maity, Principal, College of Agriculture, Tripura 20 representatives from UNICEF (Tripura), State Departments, Colleges, Farmers’ Producers’ Organizations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and NGOs also participated in the programme.

The main objective of the Workshop was to develop a comprehensive roadmap for addressing the micronutrient deficiencies through nutrition-sensitive horticultural interventions, especially, the Nutrition Gardens (including biofortified tuber crops) under the Rainbow Diet Campaign Project of ICAR-CTCRI, Kerala.
