Shri Chhabilendra Roul, Special Secretary (DARE) & Secretary (ICAR) visited ICAR-Central Institute Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai to review on-going research and development programmes of the Institute. Shri Roul urged the scientists to develop cost effective DESI technologies to produce fishes which are affordable to common man. He appreciated CIBA for its research and capacity development programmes for the brackishwater aquaculture sector of the country and developing cost effective technologies suiting to our farming systems. While appreciating the genomic research being carried out at CIBA and he urged the scientists to complete the task of full genome sequence of Indian white shrimp at the earliest, if done the first in the world. He also briefed about various policy initiatives being taken up in the Council to bring in more transparency and efficiency in the system.
Secretary, ICAR visited fin fish and shell fish hatcheries, fish nursery and farm facilities, feed mill and field laboratories at Muttukadu Experimental Station (MES) of CIBA.
The secretary released CIBA technology publication on “Polyplsu a cost effective feed for brackishwater polyculture”.
During the occasion, he has handed over the CIBA produced finfish seeds to the fish farmers who have come to procure seeds. He also visited the laboratories at the headquarters and had an interaction with the scientists and staff of CIBA.
Earlier, Dr.K.K.Vijayan, Director, CIBA highlighted the significance of brackishwater aquaculture sector in terms of its uniqueness as food producing sector, contribution for societal development, seafood exports, more than doubling the income of farmers, skill development and blue economy.
