Morphologically it is similar to rohu but grows much faster than the normal rohu. The Jayanti rohu, is recording 17% more growth per generation after seven generations of selection. It is being disseminated to farmers through private and public hatcheries with close monitoring by CIFA. Presently improved rohu seed is being disseminated to 10 states in India and more than 10 million seeds disseminated every year from CIFA directly.
The improved rohu, popularly known as "Jayanti", was named in 1997 (i.e. 50th anniversary of Indian independence- Swarna Jayanti), has been released to several hatchery owners so that they can provide better quality seed to the fish farmers.
