Shri. Vijai Sardesai, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Goa inaugurated annual review Workshop of KVKs of ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Bengaluru in collaboration with ICAR-CCARI, Goa and ICAR-KVK, North Goa (04-06 May, 2017). KVKs of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa, Puducherry and Lakshadweep participated in the Review Workshop.
While appreciating farmer oriented developmental activities of KVKs to uplift the farming community, Shri Sardesai urged the KVKs to look into the current challenges and workout strategies to change the production centric focus to income centric agriculture for doubling farmers’ income. He suggested the adoption of hybrids, high yielding verities, organic farming concept and the need for strengthening extension system. He further suggested on possibilities of exploring contract farming and community farming in Goa to improve the income of resource poor farmers.
During the plenary session, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Agriculture Extension), ICAR, New Delhi, highlighted the need for ‘Doubling Farmers Income by 2022’ . He emphasized on integration of income augmenting technologies in different farming situations, crop diversification, linking farmers with the markets, exploring options for value addition to agricultural produce and encouraging participation of youth in agriculture on convergence mode. He briefed about four national priorities viz., doubling farmer’s income, distribution of soil health card, market for produce and skill development in agriculture.
During the workshop, the heads of KVKs presented Annual Progress of their respective KVKs for the year 2016-17 which was reviewed by the Directors of Extension of SAUs and experts.
Directors and Senior Officials of local ICAR Institutes, Agricultural Universities, Heads of KVKs participated in the workshop.
