Dr. Swapan K. Datta, Deputy Director General (Crop Science), ICAR visited the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal on 10th January, 2014. He visited the Seed Processing Plant, Dairy, Piggery, Poultry and Mushroom units of University. Dr. Datta interacted with senior officers of the University.
He also visited lentil and mustard fields of farmers and observed zero tillage cultivation demonstrated by the ICAR and CAU on large scale. He appreciated the initiatives taken by the University in farmers’ field for demonstration on rain water harvesting through farm ponds and efficient use of water through micro-irrigation. He participated the Farmers’ Fair inaugurated by Md. Abdul Nasir, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Government of Manipur at CAU Research Farm & KVK, Andro. Dr. Dutta stressed on conservation of rice and fish germplasms of Manipur, organic farming, rainwater harvesting, attempts to harness solar and animal energy for power generation in remote and inaccessible areas, conservation of natural pollinators and use of bee colonies in cross pollinated crops for increasing production etc.
Deliverable technologies and success stories of the University were showcased on the occasion. Fourteen exhibition stalls of Innovative farmers were displayed in the Fair. Dr. Dutta and Md. Abdul Nasir visited different units/sections of KVK and Research Farm and exhibition stalls of University, KVK and Innovative farmers.
CAU Kisan Diary-2014 in Manipuri and Mizo versions, CAU Research Newsletter (Vo. 4 No.1) and a book on Rice were released on the occasion. Over 400 farmers participated in the Farmers-Scientists Interaction programme.
