Workshop Organized on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Rights

Workshop on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Rights Act, 2001’ was organized by Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), Port Blair on 16th December  2013.

Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CARI, presided over the function. In his inaugural address Dr. Roy explained the importance of the act for farming communities and plant breeders.

Dr. K. Ravichandran, IFS, Conservator of Forest, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, as Chief Guest appreciated the role of farmers in conservation, improving and developing plant varieties.

Experts delivered lectures on various topics viz., Role of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmer’s Rights Authority (PPVFRA), importance of plant genetic resources collection and documentation, overview of PPVFRA, breeders rights and farmers rights, registration of plant varieties and essentially derived varieties, benefits of registration, surrender and revocation of certificate and rectification and correction of register, impacts of compulsory; licensing and infringement, offences, penalties and procedures in PPVRFA.

About 75 participants including progressive farmers, officials of Line Department, scientists, research scholars, subject matter specialist attended the programme. Dr. M. Sankaran, Senior Scientist and Organizing Secretary coordinated the programme.
