Programme for Inmates of Sikkim Central Prison, Rongyek, East Sikkim organized

nofri-01-0512019The ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong organized two-day Training-cum-Skill Development Programme on “Organic Farming’ for the inmates of Sikkim Central Prison, East Sikkim” from 2nd to 3rd December, 2019.

The programme was organized under the ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Plasticulture Engineering and Technology, Ludhiana; AICRP on Mushroom Solan and All India Network Project on Organic Farming with an aim to increase the awareness, motivate and strengthen the livelihood education of the inmates on organic crop production by disseminating the scientific knowledge as a step towards rehabilitating them after their incarceration period.

Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI stressed upon the importance of scientific knowledge for commercial and intensive production of organic crops and animals for bringing about the perceptible change in the organic production scenario of the region. He emphasized on hi-tech low cost vegetable production technologies, conservation agriculture technologies, organic nutrient management and animal production technologies available with the ICAR that can enhance the inmates’ income in the near future.

Shri K.L. Tenzin, Superintendent of Police State Central Prison and Shri Renu Raj Chettri, Additional Superintendent of Police, State Central Prison, Rongyek, East Sikkim landed support in the organization of the programme.
