Dr. S. Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR urged experts of different research areas to streamline research strategies and priorities for holistic development of agriculture and allied sectors in the north-eastern region. He was interacting with scientists of ICAR Research Complex for NEH- Region during his visit to the region. Dr. Ayyappan also stressed upon the huge potential of biodiversity of the region, conservation agriculture, acid soil amelioration, effective rain water management, organic farming, integrated farming and value addition of agricultural produce through processing. He highlighted the need for human resource development programme for upgrading scientific, administrative and technical skills and mentioned different areas in agriculture, horticulture, livestock and fisheries which could go to the farmers’ field for improving overall agricultural productivity in the region.
Dr S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH-Region briefed major research and extension activities along with major contributions of the Institute in agricultural development of the region.
Dr. Ayyappan visited College of Fisheries and laid foundation stone for new College building at Guwahati, Assam and deliberated upon the scope and potential of fisheries education in overall agricultural development of the state. While visiting Shillong campus of Central Agricultural University, Manipur, he inaugurated central library and interfaced with the scientific and academic personnel. Dr. S.N. Puri, Vice-Chancellor and Dr. V.T. Raju, Dean highlighted the current activities and accomplishments of the University.
Dr. Arvind Kumar, Deputy Director General (Education) elaborated the scope of organic farming, need for enhancing fertilizer and water use efficiency for improving productivity and cropping intensity in the region during the deliberations.
