Adopt and apply the modern technologies says innovative farmer

Adopt and apply the modern technologies in the field to get more profits, suggested Mr Rakhuse, a veteran tea grower and an innovative farmer who earned two lakh rupees from his agriculture fields during previous year. While inaugurating the Kisan Mela on March 26, 2008, he emphasized on modernization of traditional agricultural practices and its up-gradation.

ITK and exploitation of local resources is the key to sustainable agriculture, said Dr C. Rajkhowa, Director, NRC on Mithun, Nagaland who was the guest of honour in the programme. In his valuable address he emphasized and requested the participants to take full advantage of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK) working in their locality in terms of recent technologies.

The Kisan Mela was organized by KVK, Porba, Phek in participatory mode with the farmers of Porba village who voluntarily gave the village ground and erected a stage for mela. The rural youths of Porba also presented a cultural programme which is practiced at the time of sowing the seeds.

More than 500 farmers of nearby area have attended the programme and participated in Crop, flower, fruit and handloom competition which was also organized in the mela. The farmers also exhibited their produce after getting training from KVK. To encourage them farmers with best entries were awarded for their products.

Farmers were welcomed by Programme Co-ordinator, Dr. R. K. Singh and he explained about the importance of mela by telling that such programmes give an opportunity to interact with fellow farmers, scientists and also give a chance to have an exposure to latest development in the field of agriculture.

Chakhesang women welfare society, an NGO from Pfutsero, State Agriculture Department, State Veterinary Department and six nearby villages have put up their stalls. KVK demonstrated latest technologies in the form of models, charts and specimens in its stall. NRCM has also put up its exhibits and displayed various valuable products that can be made from Mithun hide and milk apart from using it as meat animal. In mela scientist-farmer interactive session was also organized where farmers had interacted with scientists.
