The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture is the premier Institute for freshwater aquaculture in the country. The Institute has had its beginning in the Pond Culture Divison of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute which was established at Cuttack, Orissa in 1949. Later, the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute based at Barrackpore, West Bengal, in a major efforts to give emphasis to freshwater aquaculture research, initiated steps for establishing the Freshwater Aquaculture Research and Training Centre (FARTC) over 136 ha campus at Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar, Orissa. The Centre blossomed into its full capacity and became an independent institute during 1987 as Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture. The Institute has five Research Centres located at Rahara, West Bengal; Kalyani, West Bengal; Bangalore, Karnataka; Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh and Ludhiana, Punjab, besides KVK/TTC located at the Headquarters catering to the needs of farmers in the region. Being the premier Institute for research, training and education in freshwater aquaculture sector in the country, the Institute is recognized as a the Regional Lead Centre for Carp Farming under the FAO/UNDP Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA).
