The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) was established on 1st April 1987, by reorganisation of Fisheries Research Institutes under ICAR. The Madras Research Centre, Kakdwip Research Centre and Puri Research Centre of the erstwhile Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore and the Narakkal Research Centre of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi, were transferred to CIBA in 1987. The headquarters of the Institute was set up at Chennai with field and farm facilities at Muttukadu about 30 km south of Chennai. The Institute presently has two research centres located at Kakdwip (West Bengal) and Puri (Orissa).

The research and development activities are carried out under six research divisions/sections viz., Crustacean Culture Division, Fish Culture Division, Nutrition, Physiology and Pathology Section, Genetics & Biotechnology Section, Aquaculture Engineering & Environment Section and Extension, Economics & Information Section.
