Doubling farmers income by 2022 – State Level coordination committee’s meet on strategies and plans

A daylong meeting on the topic “Doubling farmers’ income by 2022 – State level coordination committees’ meet on strategies and plans” was organized here today.

Padma Vibhushan Prof M. S. Swaminathan delivered keynote address on the Roadmap for doubling farmer Income. In his address, he emphasized that the income could be increased through enhancement of land, water and labour productivity following eco system, farming system and cropping system approaches.  Dr. Swaminathan advocated exploiting untapped resources, empowerment of Mahila Kisans and biomass utilisation. He suggested preparing inventory of farmers, who have doubled their income and establish farm schools to replicate their examples among other farmers.

Prof. Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog, shared his views and pointed out that the role of ICAR in doubling farmers’ income is very crucial. He urged State Level Coordination Committees to focus on agro ecological sub regions within each state and demonstrate models developed by the ICAR/NARS research system at the field of farmers for greater impact. He was appreciative of the efforts of ICAR for taking this initiative of formulation of State Level Coordination Committees and developing state specific strategies for doubling the income of farmers.

Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR), in his welcome address,  briefed about the ICAR’s initiative in doubling farmers income by 2022. He informed that State Level Coordination Committees (SLCCs) for doubling farmers’ income have been constituted by ICAR with Vice Chancellor of one of the Agricultural Universities in the state as Chairman and Director of one ICAR Institute located in the state as the convener of the committee. The committees have been assigned the task of developing a comprehensive strategy document on doubling farmer income for their respective states.  The aspects covered in this document include, situation analysis, production and income gaps agroclimate technology interventions required in different agroecologies based on success already realized, procuring, value addition and market linkage, policy intervention and implementation plan.  The SLCCs have met several times and discussed involving different stake holders.  The draft documents will be modified further based on suggestions and the guidance of Prof. Swaminathan and Prof. Ramesh Chand.  These will be shared with the respective state Governments for implementation.

Senior officials of ICAR Headquarters; Vice Chancellors of Agricultural Universities and Directors of ICAR Institutes participated in the deliberations.
