Model slaughterhouse established at Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati was inaugurated by Dr. K. M. L. Pathak, Deputy Director General (Animal Science) on 2nd March 2012. Slaughterhouse was established under the World Bank funded National Agricultural Innovation Project, ‘Value chain for clean meat production from sheep’ being implemented with National Research Centre on Meat, Hyderabad as Lead Centre.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Pathak expressed happiness over collaborative work undertaken by National Research Centre on Meat and Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University. He hoped that facility will help to provided hands on training to local butchers on clean meat production and to provide information to municipal officials on requirements of an abattoir. He advised the faculty to conduct demonstration on operations of slaughterhouse to students of the concerned departments of veterinary college as a regular activity.
Dr. V. Prabhakar Rao, Vice Chancellor, SVVU thanked NAIP and ICAR for providing funding for the research project. Dr. G. Venugopal, Director, NRC on Meat briefed gathering about the salient achievements of the NAIP subproject since its launch in 2008. Dr. T. S. Chandrashekar Rao, Dean (Vety). SVVU welcomed the gathering and Dr. Srinivasulu, Associate Dean, Veterinary College, SVVU proposed vote of thanks.
NAIP calendar containing pictorial depiction of achievements of the project and the brochure on "National Research Centre on Meat - At a glance’ were released by Dr. Pathak and Dr. Prabhakar Rao respectively.
NRC on Meat conducted awareness campaign on "Brucellosis disease" and butchers were screened by collection of blood samples. DDG (AS) distributed complementary safety and hygiene accessories to butchers who were the participants of the Awareness program on ‘Hygienic meat production’.
