First ICAR – Flexi Dam Inaugurated in South India

2nd March 2017, Udhagamandalam.

Dr S. Bhaskar, Assistant Director General (AAF & CC), NRM inaugurated the First Rubber Dam in South India at Udhagamandalam and visited ICAR-IISWC, RC, Udhagamandalam on 2 March 2017. The rubber dam was installed at Sillahalla Watershed, Udhagamandalam, The Nilgiris by ICAR – Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneshwar in collaboration with ICAR – Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Regional Centre, Udhagamandalam. During the occasion he also addressed the Press and Media and briefed about the advantages of rubber dam. Further, he stated that the rubber check dam installed will be very helpful for the farmers in this area as this is flexible in nature can be inflated when needed and deflated during flood times. This kind of flexible rubber check dams can also flush the silted soils hence the problem of siltation can also be avoided. He also interacted with the beneficiary farmers about the usefulness of the rubber check dam.

Dr S. Bhaskar, ADG also visited the centre facilities – research and experimental farm, technology park, laboratory, museum, conference hall and discussed with scientists and administrative staffs.  He also highlighted the importance of cashless transactions and ERP system. He appreciated the efforts of the centre and congratulated all the scientists for their contribution to the region.
