To create awareness among the mithun farmers for scientific mithun husbandry,  the first ever Mithun Mela-cum-Farmers' Awareness Programme, was jointly organized by National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland and Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Government of Mizoram at Khuangleng village, Champai district, Mizoram. The programme was formally inaugurated by Shri Pachhunga, SDO (S), Champai district, Mizoram, the Chief Guest. Government Primary school Khuangleng village participated on this auspicious occasion and performed Mizo cultural dance of Cheraw and Par lam. Mithun occupies an important role in the Mizo-society since immemorial time and conserving this auspicious animal and increasing the population in Mizoram is a major challenge as Mizoram has the lowest population of Mithun in the North-East States More than 200 mithun farmers from Khuangleng and nearby villages participated in the Mela. Ear tagging of mithun was demonstrated by ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland.  A Farmer-Scientist interaction was organized in which the problems of the farmers were answered by the team of experts from National Research Centre on Mithun. The various technologies generated by the institute since last 28 years of its inception and the challenges faced by the farmers in mithun rearing and the need of scientific intervention in order to conserve this unique bovine species as well as to improve the livelihood of the mithun farmers were apprized. Mithun farmers were encouraged to continue rearing Mithun and to adopt the scientific mithun husbandry to improve their livelihood.
