Roadmap for Piggery Development for North East Region

Buoyant with Honourable Prime Minister’s call to double farmers’ income by 2022, the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig, Rani, Guwahati organized a huge gathering of pig farmers on 16th foundation day, 4 Sep 2017. Pig farmers and delegates of the NE region participated in the day long foundation programme.

Shri Naveen Verma, Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India, New Delhi, the Chief Guest, appreciated the efforts of the ICAR-NRC on Pig for organizing such huge farmers’ interaction programme and stressed upon to focus on piggery development in the region. He has also emphasized on forming an inter-ministerial working group on piggery development. In his presidential address Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR, New Delhi, congratulated all the staffs of the ICAR-NRC on Pig on successful completion of 15 years of its glorious existence and organizing such huge farmers gathering. He also highlighted that NITI Ayog, and DoNER Ministry should work together for uplifting the pig production in the North East region. He urged potential entrepreneurs for commercial pig farming to produce  genetically superior pigs to fulfil the demand of pig farmers.

  The programme was also graced by Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah,  honourable Vice Chancellor  of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat and Dr. R.S.Gandhi, ADG (AP&B), ICAR, as Guests of honour.  Dr. Dilip Kumar Sarma, Director, ICAR-NRC Pig, highlighted the achievements of the institute. He also presented a roadmap to increase income of 1,000 farm families through scientific pig farming within a period of 3 years. During the interactive session farmers from different parts of North East India participated in the discussion and highlighted the benefits of artificial insemination programme which has been instrumental in enhancing the price of AI born piglets to Rs 3,000 from Rs 1,000 for piglets born from natural service with local males.
