Project:

To develop viable technologies and to promote backyard poultry production in rural area

Principal Investigator : Dr. B. K. Panda

Small-scale free-range poutry farming with colourful indigenous fowl is a common practice among the tribals due to the influence of various social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Intensive efforts were made to introduce suitable high yielding birds in free-range system in order to provide quick and high returns to these comunities. Through the NGOs, several contact camps in tribal village by enrolling women of self help groups and creating awareness about the benefit of keeping high yielding birds.

After minimum training the interested recipients were supplied with 5- to 10-day-old CARIGOLD or/and VANARAJA chicks, developed at CARI and PDP under ICAR. With the technical support, health services and constant guidance by this centre and with excellent care taken by the women, these high yielding birds adopted the free-range management with unbelievable growth and production. The encouraging result attracted more number of women from neighbouring villages. The Regional Centre involved more than 2000 tribal women from different villages and about 70,000 day-old colour chicks were sold to them. The additional income generated by these women ensured their food security, self-employment and malnutrition problems to som extent with this small scale backyard poultry farming.
