MEAT TYPE PURE LINE STOCK

White Synthetic Male Line (WSML)

In order to develop superior synthetic specialised lines with white plumage background, the selection programme was undertaken in two sub-lines of White Synthetic Male Line for a period of seven generations. The selection programme in this line showed the following characteristics:
  • Clear divergence between lines for body weights, growth rate as well as for FCR and FE after 7 generations of selection programme.
  • The birds of SF line are slightly leaner and slow growing than those of SG line.
  • Significant improvement in primary traits of selection in both the lines has resulted considerable improvement in correlated traits.
  • A white commercial broiler with excellent growth rate and outstanding dressing percentage.
  • Genetically high tolerance to heat stress conditions.
  • Broiler with superior feed conversion, less fat and more meat.

White Synthetic Dam Line (SDL)

At present the Synthetic Broiler Dam Line has completed 9th generation (S9) of selection. The works taken up during the period were regeneration, evaluation, selection and maintenance of the SDL and Control population. For regeneration of SDL, 50 sires and 350 dams were mated in a ratio of male: female as 1:7, whereas Control population was regenerated from 25 sires and 175 dams with same mating ratio. Selection intensities in SDL males and females were 2.23 and 1.34 respectively.

Coloured Synthetic Male Line (CSML)

The selection programme in this line is continuing for several generations. The individuals in each generation with high 6-week body weight formed the parental stock for the next generation. This line is characterised by its bright plumage colour with single comb. This line was developed specially for higher body weight and better body conformation.

Coloured Synthetic Female Line (CSFL)

This line is also characterised by colourful plumage with single comb. This line was developed specially for high body weight and good egg production. The selection programme in this line is continuing for more than 10 generations. The average body weights in male, female and combined sex of CSML in the recent generation were 907, 810 and 859 g at 4-weeks, 1198, 1040 and 1120 g at 5-weeks, 1538, 1312 and 1426 g at 6-weeks and 1905, 1710 and 1805g at 7-weeks of age.

Introgression of Frizzle (Fz) Gene

Introgression of frizzle gene for developing a better heat tolerant broiler stock suitable for tropical climate was going on in the broiler project at C A R I. Conventional selection and breeding strategies were applied for introgression of major gene from the donor line (Frizzle Desi Fowl) into the recipient line (Synthetic Dam Line). So far three generations of back crossing with broiler parents have been completed. In each generation, body weight showed an increasing trend. In the third backcross generation, the six weeks body weight showed an increasing trend. In the third back-cross generation, the six weeks body weight was observed as 970.71g with a coefficient of variation of 16.99%. The Frizzle birds are not having better survivability in tropical heat stress, but also having an attractive look.

MEAT TYPE COMMERCIAL STOCK

Development of suitable high yielding broiler stocks, entirely different from imported commercial broiler stocks available in the market, the exhaustive research programme was conceptualized at C.A.R.I., Izatnagar. The important goal of this project has been consistent research development, testing and breeding several broiler stocks that excel in the important areas of economic growth, feed efficiency, livability meat quality and also the plumage colour with high performance features in tropical climate.
