Historical Perspective

Way back in 30's the role of poultry in fighting poverty and malnutrition was recognized and on the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Agriculture (1927), a separate Poultry Research Section was established at the Imperial (now Indian) Veterinary research Institute, Izatnagar - 243 122, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India on March 11, 1939. Later on, the Poultry Research Section became a fullfledged division and continued to play a significant role in growth and development of the Indian Poultry Industry under the stalwarts like Mr. Macdonald (1939-1947), Dr. S.G. Iyer (1949-1955), Dr. S. Bose (1958-1968) and Dr. B. Panda (1969-1979). The Poultry Research Division at Izatnagar made phenomenal progress during 70's and became the biggest poultry research organization in India.

Because of its facilities, the All India Coordinated Research project on Poultry Breeding was located here with 14 centres in different parts of this country. Later it drew the attention of United National Development Programme (UNDP) and a Centre of Excellence in Poultry Science was established here, to train people needed for research and development of poultry industry in the country.

In order to provide all-round support to the progress of poultry production, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) established the Central Avian Research Institute (Central Avian Research Institute) at Izatnagar on 2nd November, 1979.
